On a clear day the historic Eddystone Lighthouse sits on the horizon, beckoning the adventurous sea paddler. It seems deceptively close, though it actually lies 9 miles offshore - alone in the English Channel.
The trip is a regular for many a sea kayaker looking to push offshore, though it should not be taken for granted. While tidal flows are relatively moderate, there is no shelter at the destination - you are fully exposed to whatever the wind and weather brings.
If you want to add a timed run then the start/finish point is up to you, however timings should start/finish at a realistic (walk-away) launch point/beach (not headlands etc).
Previously the Mayflower Offshore Rowing Club ran a race to the Eddystone - the Eddystone Challenge. We have included results from 2009, 2010 + 2011 races. If you want to compare times, then the race started/finished between the end of MountBatten Pier and South Mallard Buoy. The course was across Plymouth Sound and out through the Western channel end of the Breakwater (2 miles) and then on to the Eddystone Lighthouse - a further 12 miles. Around the Lighthouse in an anti-clockwise direction and return to Plymouth Sound via the Eastern Channel end of the Breakwater.
The Eddystone Rocks Challenge course starts and finishes wherever you choose, however, bear in mind the PSK 'Sand-to-Sand' rule.
