Get out and Paddle...
While the 'usual' crossing of the English Channel cuts across the Straits of Dover there is another route, from the English South Coast to the Cherbourg Peninsula. This crossing is roughly twice the distance and has to contend with not only the busy shipping lanes but also the fast tidal flows off Cherbourg and the frequent occurrences of fog. At nearly 70nm this is a challenging and impressive undertaking.
