The use of Escort Boats (likely a RIB or small fishing charter boat) within attempts has been highlighted where applicable.
"Escort: person or persons accompanying another or others for protection, guidance, or courtesy."It is not possible to directly compare a record that was undertaken solo, or within a self contained team, with one that was accompanied by an escort boat - especially for open crossings. The challenge of un-escorted crossings can be regarded as much greater.
For the purpose of the PSK site an Un-Escorted trip is one where there are no pre-arranged measures put in place for on the water safety cover or assistance, that is no boat on the water either travelling alongside or awaiting at a distance. Any other arrangement is classed as Escorted.
An escort provides a significant advantage by providing assistance in the areas of navigation, pacing, supplies, safety and, not least of all, morale. To paddle un-escorted across many miles of open water takes a level of committment and skill above that required during an escorted attempt. The hierachy of record attempts:
- Un-escorted - Solo
- Un-escorted - Team/Double
- Un-escorted - Sail Assisted
- Escorted - Solo
- Escorted - Team/Double
- Escorted - Sail Assisted
Note: For some events such as the English Channel - Straits of Dover crossings, escort boats are to all intents and purposes mandatory.
